In the foothills of the Sierra Prieta, between the two white villages of Casarabonela and Alozaina, lies a little bit of paradise. Finca Caicunes is set in 30 hectares of garden and orchards growing olives, citrus fruits and pomegranates. In the garden itself, there are several mature fig trees - you can pick fresh figs for breakfast!
These four pictures show the private swimming pool, the main two storey, traditional house with balcony and the modern two bedroom bungalow. All of these are ours for the duration of our stay and, distributed between the two houses, are eight bedrooms.
The fourth picture shows Brenda (six months pregnant!) - who modelled for us in 2017 - pictured beside one of the mature fig trees near the house.
The Finca is completely private - the nearest neighbour (Maria) is 1 km away. Finca Caicunes has its own large, private pool and pool house with showers and a sauna.
This is an idyllic spot - perfect for relaxing in the sun, dining outdoors, walking in the hills and - most importantly - improving your photography whilst working with beautiful models every day.
Despite its quiet location, the Finca is only 45 minutes drive from Malaga airport.
The pictures below were all taken during the 2017 workshop, and show the models that were with us then. You will notice that we were privileged to do Brenda's maternity shoot as part of the workshop.
The pictures in the block of twelve below were all taken by Gabor Lonyai. Gabor attended the 2017 workshop in Spain and the 2018 workshop in France. Gabor has very kindly allowed me to use some of his background pictures to show what the Finca and its surroundings look like. I hope you'll agree that the scenery is fantastic and that the whole place is full of photographic possibilities.
Here is what Gabor says about the workshop experience:
"I have been on Bruce's workshops in Spain and France and I highly recommend the experience. I'm a beginner in photography and these workshops provided a huge chance to learn and to improve my technique.
Daria and Alice are very nice models to work with - they are helpful and they both know what they're doing. If you join this workshop you will not be disappointed."
As well as shooting in the extensive private grounds of the Finca, we also venture out on location. We will visit the beach for an evening shoot and also make use of the inspiring surroundings in the local villages.
See below for some examples from September 2017.
Full Details and How To Book
We last came to Finca Caicunes in September 2017 - but one week was not long enough. So, in 2019, we are coming again - but this time for a two week stay - from the 16th to the 29th of September.
We shoot each day for a maximum of four hours - two hours in the morning and two hours in the early evening. The rest of the day is for relaxing by the pool, editing photos or strolling in the gardens and orchards. If you hire a car (not expensive) you can drive off to explore further afield.
We all eat together each evening - usually outside on the terrace, under the pine trees.
On one evening each week, we plan to go to the beach for a sunset shoot - photographing the models as the waves break on the sand. Also, on a least one night each week, those who are willing to get up at 3am have the chance to do a night shoot (tutored by me), capturing the Milky Way with long exposure techniques.
Included in the price
Accommodation in your own room with a super-king double bed or (at a lower price) two single beds. Bathrooms and showers are not ensuite, but there are four of them, shared between the eight bedrooms.
Four hours of photography each day with both models - usually a group of three photographers (maximum) working with one model and then a model change at the midpoint of the two hour session.
Tuition (as required) in the use of off-camera flash photography, high speed sync and working with models. Tuition is also offered in underwater photography and astrophotography. If you have your own speedlights/strobe, please feel free to bring them. If you want to bring your own laptop - with Lightroom - then I can also share tips on photo editing with you.
Food for breakfast, lunch and dinner each day is also included. Breakfast and lunch tend to be "help yourself from the kitchen" but we take it in turns to cook for the group each evening - don't worry if you can't cook! We will also ask Maria (a lovely local lady who lives nearby) to cook paella (or another local dish) for us once a week.
We have wine and/or beer with our evening meal and a reasonable amount of this is included in the price. You can also buy more when we go to the local supermarket.
Not included in the price
Return flights to Malaga from the UK - most of the budget airlines operate frequent flights.
Transfers from Malaga airport to Finca Caicunes. You may choose to rent a car (not expensive) or a taxi can be arranged for you by Maria (she knows a local taxi driver) for about €55 each way.
Any meals out at restaurants. We may perhaps do this on the day of the sunset beach shoot. If we do eat out, we share the cost of the model's meals between the photographers.
Two weeks in a double room - £1,800
Two weeks in a twin room - £1,600
One week (subject to availability) in a double room - £1,000
One week in a twin room - £900
If you'd like to share your room with a (non-photographer) friend or partner, you can do this for an additional £400 per week. This includes their food and drink, but does not include the opportunity to shoot with the models.
To secure your place on this workshop, a £300 deposit (or £200 for one week) is required. This deposit is returnable if you cancel - but only if the place is booked subsequently. The balance must be paid five weeks before departure. Booking is via the 'contact me' buttons - there are lots on this page and one directly below. You can also use the 'contact me' buttons to ask any questions you may have.
